Buy this book by Bill Mayer. Practical, common sense for new fathers.
I judge all parenting book on 3 criteria:
1. Is it funny?
2. Is it useful information?
3. How many trips to the toilet will it take too read cover to cover?
This book is funny, it is loaded with good tips and useful information and it can be read covber to cover in about 4 trips to the crapper.
I saw Barnes & Noble has it for about 13 bucks. If you can find it cheaper, leave a comment and i'll update the link.

On the subject of parent-books (not necessarily "parent-ing books"), and in light of mother's day, I would recommend Waiting for Birdy by Catherine Newman. Catherine is my favorite mother-writer. I read this when Maggie was a newborn and can remember both laughing outloud and crying fat, juicy tears onto a sleeping baby.
It is not factually informative, but it helped me remember how much I love the members of my family during a stressful time, and hopefully made me more patient and thoughtful with them.
I have no idea how many trips to the bathroom it would take the woman in your life to read it. But if she is spending her days nursing and cuddling a newborn, I'm sure she would get through it quickly.
